IN MOTU Old School Fencing Saber M2
IN MOTU Old School Practice Saber M2 – Lightweight & Historically Oriented
The original approach: realistic, safe training sabers
✔ Lighter, narrower blade for controlled fencing
✔ Dynamics similar to historical training sabers of the 19th-20th centuries.
✔ Modular system – individually configurable
In a nutshell
The Old School Practice Sabre M2 is the consistent implementation of our basic idea:
a training weapon based on historical training sabers and at the same time safe, controllable and useful in modern HEMA.
⚔️ The idea behind the M2
Historical training sabers were usually:
- relatively easy
- easy to control
- Designed for clean fencing dynamics
The M2 takes exactly this approach:
👉 no artificially increased weight
👉 but a weapon that can be used realistically, efficiently and in a controlled manner
⚙️ Construction & Dynamics
The saber is based on a light saber blade:
- Trapezoidal cross-section in blade thickness (good parrying ability)
- Rectangular shape (for high flexibility)
- tapered towards the tip
- Flex according to FIE specification
👉 The blade is flexible in the front third, but remains stable and controllable in the lower area.
The result:
- secure stitch dynamics
- precise cuts
- controllable behavior in combat
🛡️ Safety & Usability
The M2 was designed to be:
- which can also be used safely in free combat
- controlled hits enable
- usable with a comparatively moderate level of protection
👉 A training weapon with which one can can fence with genuine intention, without creating unnecessary harshness
⚖️ M2 or M1?
M2 (this model)
- easier
- more agile
- closer to historical training sabers
👉 Ideal for:
- technical fencing
- controlled sparring
- historically oriented approach
M1 (Alternative)
- heavier
- more mass
- Specifically designed for fencers who prefer or require a higher weight.
👉 e.g. for:
- Tournament requirements
- personal preference
🛠️ Modular system
The saber is fully configurable:
Blade shape
- straight
- curved (inspired by historical models)
Bell jar
- light → better mobility
- heavier → more stability
Handle
- various handle options
- optional with additional weight
👉 Handles and knobs are compatible between M1 and M2 and can be used across models.
👉 Due to the wider M1 blade, current M1 bells have a larger blade opening. Therefore, bells and blades from M1 and M2 are not interchangeable without modifications.
👉 Within each model, all components remain interchangeable and combinable.

🧠 Development
The Old School Saber M2 was specially developed for HEMA with a focus on:
- meaningful fencing dynamics
- safe use
- practical use
👉 Not a reenactment or decorative object, but a functional training tool
🛡️ Safety Notice
- Use only with appropriate protective equipment
- Regular inspection of the blade and components is recommended.
👉 Safety always depends on correct application.
